HELP! Grapevine........
« on: July 19, 2009, 08:05:52 PM »
I cut this grape vine and man is it weeping.......you can see it is wet and oozing out the ends. this is 3 hours since it was cut......I never seen any wood do this so much in my live. I painted the ends as I have done before and the sap pushed the paint off........
What would you do with it?

They are about all water you will just have to let it dry. Next time leave the bark on them until they dry this will help keep them from cracking on the side if they try to dry too fast.

Get some DNA soak overnight take out let dry won't take very long then seal the ends place in brown paper bag for 2 or 3 weeks take out and should be about ready to turn. If they are going to be call blanks cut to length drill smaller dia. hole in them than will be the final size before soakingand drying.

YEAH, they are fULL of water/sap. Like the guys said, all you can do is dry them. Another trick that may come in handy with these is to use some cheap wire and wrap them tightly to hold them tight as they dry. Keep the winds as close, but not overlapping as possibe. Drilling is almost a must. The vines will shrink some as the water leaves them, so you my have to rewrap them a couple times Good luck,

Interesting post as I have very large dia. vines within 10 ft. of the parking lot at work.I should whack a few off and go for it.

I sometimes sit on the deer stand and whittle out a call while waiting. USUALLY from a stick or branch I find near by.

Wait till winter and cut when the vines go dormant.  Should be far less water in the wood then.  And should be more stable as well.

Of course maybe it grows year round down by you?
