Bill nailed the size!
This was only a test piece and it seems to be fine I cut it and got almost an 1/8" penetration in places in just an hour...
So if I pre-drill and rough turn the actual piece for the call It should go all the way through over night.....

Thanks for the offer bushbuck : I think I got it figured out now.....and I am learning a lot too... :punk: :punk: :punk:

I've used the transtint dyes from Woodcraft (quite cheaper elsewhere online) for some various woodworking projects.  They're awesome.  For callmaking I don't think I see the need to pre-soak the blank.  I'd turn it and sand it to about 220, dye it with repeated coats until the color depth you want is achieved, then sand on down through the finer grits.  More dye can always be re-applied.

In alchohol the only issue is overlap between coats/strokes because the alcohol dries so fast...Probably the benefit of pre-soaking.

I've used it in water as well...But it raises the grain so there's more pre-wetting and sanding involved.  Overlap's not an issue though.

A little bit of dye goes a looooong way.

Still on the dye and ebonizing huh

Can't wait to see the results.  You use powder or liquid ritt dye?  I tried mixing into tung oil   Would not dissolve in the oil.

I had to put it on the back burner for a bit but I will post it when I am finished.....I am thinking now of using a different kind of wood to get the look I want.
