Finish Guys, Need some Advice..
« on: March 11, 2010, 01:17:09 PM »
Ok, been doing some testing with Minwax Fast Drying polyurethane dipping the calls and pulling them out very slowly as outlined by BigB's tutorial (i believe).

I dipped one call that had a CA finish to 1000 grit and it actually turned out pretty stunning.  My question is will this last? is there any bonding issues between Ca glue and a poly dip?

I also dipped a few calls that were either just sanded of finished with the dark hut wax the look decent, nothing like the ca finished one.  Do i need to be sanding these between coats or will the multi coats fill it out?  So far ive got one dipped once, and another has had two dips.

Basically looking to see what everyone has experienced/learned as to what the best finish with poly is, so far for me is the CA finish dipped once (so far) in poly.  Your thoughts
Thanks
Colby

I'd really consider going to spar urethane as opposed to polyurethane.  Spar is designed to get wet and stay wet, and is quite a bit more durable than poly.  Working properties are pretty similar.  Dipping in it works great...I thin mine with about 40% mineral spirits.  It builds nice and thick but can take a day or two to dry.  Tough as nails, not to mention beautiful.  I buff with 0000 steel wool between coats.

I don't see much point in dipping a call that has a CA finish.  I'd say pick one or the other, but I can't say I've personally tried combining the two.

I also wouldn't be dipping anything that has a wax finish already on it.  Poly and similar finishes aren't going to bond to wax all that well.

Personaly if you are doing a good looking CA finish...I`d stay with that only

I do 2-3 coats of CA on every call before dipping in my poly mixture. Make sure you thin your poly at least 66-33

I like the CA finishes too. I've gone to that on my pens now.

Wax goes over the finish. I can't say with 100% certainty but I don't think that one will hold up. The finish you're using needs to bond to the wood & the wax will/should/could act as a release agent. I would be interested in your findings doing it this way.
