First attempt with CA Finish
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:28:41 AM »
So First time post but been lurking around for a bit, learned a ton so far, and have barely scratched the surface.  Anyway did the CA glue finish on two calls today, let me say it was a chore for me, not sure if i was doing it right or what but the result i am pretty pleased with.  got some more stuff to try and any pointers are welcome now.

On to the call, Cocobolo with echo insert i believe (working on making the matching insert this weekend.  thats a whole other post in itself)  anyway critique me, laugh at me, tell me you have to have it, whatever, its the best way to learn
Again thanks for the amazing info by everyone here. (excuse the poor picture quality too, thats something im gonna be messing with soon)

Hi,  I am sorta of new at this as well.  Nice work, your form looks real good.  I make a lot of pens and shaving brushes and use a C/A finish on them.  What i have found, is to try and keep the beads and deep coves to a minium. They tend to build up the C/A and the finish starts to ghost.  To combat that is to use mineral oil with 400-600 grit auto sandpaper and smooth it out between coats of C/A. When you do that it gets everything smooth without removing the buildup of C/A.  I sand and apply C/A at the lowest speed my lathe goes. (500rpm)
I never use water on wood. I use water on Acrylics. I hope this helps, good luck.   Carl

did you finish the inside as well? How did you do that area? The call looks great.

From what I see, you have it pretty much figured out.  That is a fine looking finish and a great looking call.  The picture does not show any defects at all.  I think you did a great job   I give the overall call an A.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone!

SP180  no i didn't apply this to the inside, haven't really found a good way to finish the inside, trying to figure that out myself.  If anyone wants to share that process that would be great.

talltimbers,  i will try the mineral oils next time for sure, i was kinda lenient to use the water as the instructions said, seemed odd.

I have really become fond of the CA.. I dont worry about getting more than a 1/8 or so inside the barrel.. most of the time I do stabilized wood anyhow.. but even on regualr woods, I never finished the insides fo barrels with my old finish and had no issues.. usually a swab or two with some velvit oil makes it look nice and protects it a bit..
I sand in a few coats.. get her all sanded off, and then start applying.. I do 4 or 5 coats with thin CA.. and then spray it with activator to be sure its set.. then I go right to Thick CA.. build 8-10 coats of that, activator.. then I start at 200 and sand all the way up to 1800 or so, steel wool, novus 3. vocus 2, tripoli, then white diamond, and they come out looking like glass...plus once they are off the lathe they are done!! and NO RUNS!!!

That looks super!!
