Seccond pot (cocobolo)
« on: July 17, 2010, 04:44:50 PM »
Well here is the other half of the coco form the forst pot call that i made. Hopefully this one sounds a little better when I put it together. Still need to do a little sanding and a few more coats of poly before I start glueing anything in though. Sure looks good IMO .

Nice looking pot for sure.  Certainly good for your 2nd pot!  If you're getting poly to work on cocobolo you're doing better than most...Shellac first?

As far as shape/sound, give it a try the way you've got it, but I'd think that you might get better sound out of it if the bottom were not quite as thick, resulting in such a short pedestal.  I make mine by eye but I'd say my pedestals are a good 5/16" tall more or less.  I also try to keep the lip that the playing surface sits on as narrow as reasonably possible...Never more than 1/8".  Anything wider and you're just taking away from the vibration in the surface, and a little makes a lot of difference sometimes.  Take it all with a grain of salt....Lots of ways to skin this cat, that's for sure.

Just take measurements and detailed notes on each call you make before you close it up.  The learning curve will be a lot steeper that way.

ill keep that in mind. Im acutally using a satin poly gel for the base of the finish no Shellac first. seems to work well for a nice thick coat and grain filler. Takes a while to dry completely and lose the tackyness. After I use an oil based semi gloss poly for the final touches. It all takes a little while to dry but looks fairly nice when its all done.
