Wood ID
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:36:36 PM »
need some help identifying this wood.  i have a 10 foot board of this stuff and it is 2 inches thick.  i got it from my grandfather and he has no idea what it is.  he said it had been in his father's shop for years.  it is free of knots, and has a really tight looking grain.  sorry for the pics, but my wife has the camera so a cell phone will have to do.  thanks guys

Looks kinda like fir to me.  Is it heavy?

you may be right.  my great grandfather owned his own construction business, so i'm sure he probably had a lot of use for fir.  i only made one call out of it a year ago, and it felt like turning something soft like cedar.  it reminded me of pine, but i could tell that it was not a pine board.  the more i think of it, i think you may have solved the mystery.  wonder if it would be suitable for making duck calls?

It looks like fir to me as well.  It'll make a call, but isn't a great wood for callmaking.  It is a softwood, and will be really light when turned into a duck call.  You could probably get a decent turkey pot call out of it though.

the call i made a year ago was a turkey pot and it is probably one of my favorite sounding calls.  i paired it with a cherry soundboard, and the turkeys just seem to love it.  i actually killed the biggest bird of my career this past spring using this very same call.   thanks for the help guys.  i think we can mark this one case closed     :hammer:
