The checkering looks superb for your first one!!!  Not very many overruns, as overruns are easy to get when first starting out.  You will want to get all of the diamonds up to a pointy peak, and not the flat tops.  But that will come with time and just a few more passes with the cutters.  The border tool can be a really good friend to smooth up a few stray overruns, and you have incorporated a border nicely into your panels.

Panels that are wider than they are tall are tougher to checker.  It's harder to bring the diamonds up to a point, as you probably found out on your insert.

With that kind of start with your first call, checkering will only get easier for ya.  I can't wait to see what you come up with next.  The only downside to checkering is how time consuming it is.
