Going to Jamaica in a couple weeks... what wood?
« on: July 22, 2010, 09:03:57 PM »
Is there any wood I should pick up while I'm there?

Thanks for any advice,

Cliff

Went there last year on my honeymoon.  Some of the wooden items in the shops are made from very unique and beautiful woods. I couldn't get anyone to ID the wood in the shops, so I don't know if it is from there or where.

They do have an ironwood down there, but I don't know how much of it gets cut up into turning squares.  The island isn't very big, and once you get out of the touristy areas, it quickly turns into poverish areas.  There are some shops set up like local flea market types of things, so you might start there.  They look like a bunch of scrap metal shacks all clustered together.  They'll sell trinckets and local crafty things.  Don't be in a hurry when you go to Jamaica.  They are on island time, and things will get done when they are ready to get done.  Nobody is in a hurry at all!

I went to the southern Caribbean this spring and was hard pressed to find any turning blanks but I ended up finding a mortar and pestle set and bought the pestle to turn into a couple of calls.  I think it was ironwood but I'm not positive.  Definitely check the local flea markets that's where I found the mortar and pestle.

Don't look for turning blanks.... just look for wood you may be able to use!  Jamaica is a very poor island and does not have allot of interest in stuff like wood.  All the pretty stuff you see is imported.  That said, there is wood there to be had.  If you keep your eyes open in areas like old boats yards, junk yards, or marinas.. you may find some good stuff.  Be careful though... you can get in trouble in shady areas.  You can trade and barter with those folks with great success.  Best thing to do is find a local who is friendly.. try a cab driver... and ask the basic questions.  Don't go where they want to take you... make them come to you.
