Spalted Maple
« on: July 22, 2010, 08:06:02 PM »
I have done a few searches on how to best handle this stuff. I found a couple of good pieces that I want to try and turn. Them seem to be hard enough to turn but I thought that I read somewhere that I had to cure or treat it first. And to wear a mask when turning. Any help for the new call marker would be great.

What would be the first thing that I need to do to it, and so on.... just so I dont kill myself or get the ichys..

The spalting is just another form of mold.  It is in the process of decaying the wood.  It makes for some great figure in the wood, but it is what it is.  If the wood is solid enough to turn, you can turn it.  Be careful of punky areas, as they will want to blow out on you.  If you do turn it, make sure you have a good respirator and dust collector going, as you don't want to breath in the mold.  Lots of folks send out the spalted wood to be stabilized.

BigB said it.  You can fortify it quite a bit with thin CA glue, which it soaks up.
