Question about branding calls
« on: July 25, 2010, 08:37:18 PM »
I have been looking everywhere on this site trying to find a cheap and easy way to mark my duck calls, I have tried woodburning them, but that did not go all that great.  I have read about a rubber stamp, that sounds good, but I wouldnt know where to get a stamp, or how long one may last.  I have also looked into laser engraving, but I really wouldnt want to spend $5 a call to get them laser engraved, pluss the the shipping.  I'm just looking for the easiest and cheapest way to mark my duck calls.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Travis

You could use a dremel or electric engraver. Or alot of guys use pens to sign the call before applying a finish. I cant remember right now what kind of pen. It has a certian name but its not a sharpie. I got mine from Micheals.

I prefer to use my dremel and initial the toneboards on the duck calls.

thanks, JCZ I finish most of my calls with oil though.  I was using polyeurothane, but kept getting runs and cant figure it out.  I applied poly and 2 days later it still wasn't dry.

The pen I use to sign my calls is called a pigma pen.  You can get them really cheap on ebay.  It works really well and I finish my calls with 60/40 spar and mineral spirits.  Hope this helps.

Thanks John, thats what I was looking for. Pigma pens are what you are looking for if ink is the way you want to go.

As for the finish taking so long to dry. If you are putting poly on an oily wood it will not dry properly. You need to use a good sanding sealer first then apply the poly. But I also recommend making a switch to spar/mineral spirits.

Laser your bands.  Averages out to about $2.10 a band, and looks very nice.
We have certain work to do for our bread and that is to be done strenuously; other work to do for our delight and that is to be done heartily; neither is to be done by halves or shifts, but with a will; and what is not worth this effort is not to be done at all.
